The time of the novel is very important because if that happened in our days Charlie’s dad would’ve divorced his mother. In the novel Charlie’s mother cheats on Charlie’s dad and when reading the novel we get the impression that Charlie’s dad has always known about this other man and has only been staying with Mrs Bucktin for Charlie. Mrs Bucktin wears the pants in the family and Mr Bucktin usually just agrees with whatever she says and goes along with things even if Charlie doesn’t agree. Charlie Bucktin, the main character is quite a shy young boy living with his parents. Few married couples divorced and usually the man was the most dominant. In the 1960’s in Australia, families were stereotyped. With an understanding of the context, being in the time of the Vietnam War we can understand Jeffrey’s situation better and have an insight on why Jeffrey’s family is so harshly treated. Jeffrey is also a talented cricket player but with his background, none of the other kids take him seriously and he is always excluded. In the novel Jeffrey’s mother gets hot water spilt on her because the ladies husband died in the War and she wanted to take it out on their family.

His family is not welcome in the small town of Corrigan and are abused and bullied. The Vietnam War is going on in the background of the novel and affects a character called Jeffrey. Jasper Jones is set in 1965, in a small town called Corrigan in Australia. The context in Jasper Jones influences the idea of racism a lot and also affects the characters. This essay will explain how an understanding of the time, setting, context of the author and my own context influences each of these ideas. In the novel Jasper Jones the ideas of racism, family and friendship are greatly influenced by the context of the novel.
